Travel industry hails end of U.S. government shutdown
The government shutdown didn't affect preparations for the Colorado ski season, but U.S. travel industry leaders the overall cost in lost direct spending could exceed $2.2 billion, as some countries warned their citizens against traveling to the U.S. during the shutdown.

Are you ready to ski and ride, Colorado?
If you haven't waxed your skis or snowboard yet, now's the time. The 2013-2014 Colorado ski season will officially start this Sunday, Oct. 13, with the opening of Arapahoe Basin. The Summit County ski area will operate one chair (the Black Mountain Express) serving the High Noon trail.

With another autumn snowstorm set to sweep through the Colorado Rockies, several ski area operators around Summit County are targeting mid-October opening dates. Loveland, Arapahoe Basin and Copper Mountain have all started snowmaking operations, so the ski and snowboard season will be here sooner rather than later.

Nearly every ski area in Colorado picked up at least a few inches of snow from an early October storm, with a foot at Steamboat, 10 inches at Winter Park, 9 inches at Powderhorn and half a foot at many other areas. With powder starting to blanket the slopes, it might just be time to get up to speed with the latest news from your favorite area, and in the age of social media, one of the best ways to do that is to sign up for Twitter and follow the ski areas you're interested in.

Copper Mountain improving access to high alpine terrain this winter
After significant upgrades to the family and learning side of the resort the last couple seasons, Copper Mountain is focusing on improving the high alpine experience by easing access to the top of the mountain. One of the biggest changes is the replacement of the Storm King Poma with new T-bar to speed skiers and snowboarders to Spaulding Bowl, Upper Enchanted Forest and Copper Bowl.

Tenmile Creek restoration under way near Copper Mountain
In partnership with local groups, the U.S. Forest Service is leading a project to restore a stretch of the stream that's been seriously degraded by more than 100 years of human manipulation, including mining, logging, historic railroad building and highway construction.
