Colorado skiing: Weather drives resort visits the past few seasons

Colorado skier-visit numbers have been on a wild ride since the last five years, slumping after the big recession, recovering to near-record levels during the super-snowy 2011 winter. Since then, weather and snow appear to be driving the train. Periodic reports from Colorado Ski Country USA from the last few years show intra-seasonal variations, with lulls during low-snow periods, and spikes when there's plentiful powder.

Multiple equipment failures cause lengthy power outage at Copper Mountain

Multiple power outages at Copper Mountain the past week were caused by faulty equipment in a substation feeding the resort. Xcel Energy believes the outages appear to be related to multiple equipment failures in the field and at the substation in Frisco, which serves the resort. As part of its investigation, Xcel will look at the overall system and power demand to try and prevent future outages, and to determine whether the power infrastructure serving Copper Mountain is adequate.

Copper Mountain to host snowsports trade group skiing demo event

Copper Mountain will host the big on-snow Nordic demo event Feb. 3-4, 2014 as part of the SIA On-Snow Demo/Ski-Ride Fest, bringing thousands of snow sports pros to the Summit County resort. Copper Mountain is working closely with SIA to develop a Nordic testing site, including 25k of Nordic trails currently offered to guests during the winter season. The trade group also sees the session as an opportunity to boost public interest in Nordic during an Olympic year.

Copper Mountain to Vail Pass bike path gets a makeover

CDOT is spending nearly $1 million to improve the bike path between Copper Mountain and Vail Pass. Work started in early July, with construction Monday through Thursday. No work is planned during the busy weekend, when hundreds of cyclists test themselves on the five-mile section, climbing about 1,500 feet to the crest of the Rockies.

Music legends Kenny Rogers and Michael McDonald coming to Copper Mountain this summer

With the summer season just beginning at Copper Mountain, music fans are already looking ahead to some of the big headliners announced for two events that have become perennial favorites at the Colorado resort.

In early August, the Jerry Douglas Band is part of the lineup for Guitar Town, featuring a full slate of acoustic and electric performances, along with workshops, demos and much more. And the season-ending Copper Country Festival lineup includes country music legend Kenny Rogers, as well as Michael McDonald, who wrote many of the big Doobie Brothers hits.
